Tragedy Strikes RCB victory celebration stampede in Bengaluru

A Celebration That Turned Dark

June 4, 2025, was supposed to be a historic day for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans. After 18 long years of heartbreaks, memes, and the iconic chant “Ee Sala Cup Namdu” (This year, the cup is ours), the team finally clinched their first IPL title. Bengaluru was ready to party, and the streets around M. Chinnaswamy Stadium were painted red and gold. But what started as a jubilant celebration quickly spiraled into chaos and stampede, leaving 11 dead and over 50 injured. This blog dives into the events of that fateful day, the cultural significance of RCB’s victory, and the urgent need for better crowd management in India.

The Day of the Stampede: What Went Wrong?

The celebrations began with high spirits as an estimated 2–3 lakh fans gathered outside the stadium, which has a capacity of just 35,000. The crowd was there to catch a glimpse of their heroes, especially Virat Kohli, the face of RCB for 18 years. However, the sheer number of people overwhelmed the venue and the 5,000 police personnel deployed for security.
The stampede tragedy was triggered by the collapse of a temporary slab placed over a drain near the stadium. The slab gave way under the weight of the crowd, causing panic and a deadly stampede near Gates 3, 10, and 21. Victims, mostly young fans aged 13 to 35, were caught in the chaos. Emergency services were delayed due to overcrowded roads, and metro services were suspended to manage the situation.

A Pattern of Tragedies: Lessons from the Past

Unfortunately, the stampede at Bengaluru is not an isolated incident. India has a history of crowd-related tragedies at large gatherings, from religious festivals to sports celebrations. For instance:

  • In 2007, Mumbai’s T20 World Cup victory parade saw massive overcrowding and injuries.
  • Earlier this year, a stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival claimed 30 lives.

The common thread? Overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and delayed emergency response. These incidents highlight the urgent need for better planning and safety protocols.

The Aftermath: Accountability and Action

The Karnataka government has announced compensation for the victims’ families and ordered a Magistrate-level inquiry into the stampede incident. However, political blame games have already begun, with the opposition criticizing the government’s failure to anticipate the massive turnout.
But let’s be honest—this isn’t just about politics. It’s about a systemic failure to prioritize safety at large public events. Temporary structures like the slab that collapsed are a disaster waiting to happen. And while we can’t control the passion of fans, we can certainly control how we manage it.

The Bigger Picture: Why This Matters

RCB’s victory was supposed to be a unifying moment for Bengaluru, a city that lives and breathes cricket. Instead, it became a grim reminder of the cost of poor planning. As fans, we need to demand better from event organizers and authorities. And as a society, we need to ensure that celebrations don’t come at the cost of lives.
